Berry Systems installed a range of safety barriers for a new 627-space, 6-storey car park at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
Derriford Hospital, like many healthcare facilities, faces the challenge of accommodating a growing number of patients, visitors, and staff with limited parking.
The newly constructed 627-space multi-storey car park on the North West Quadrant is designed to alleviate this issue and support the daily footfall of approximately 8,000 people.
The car park is part of a 6.6-hectare site being developed by Wharfside Regeneration for Plymouth Hospitals Trust. Designed by international architects S333 and constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine Limited, the car park features an eco-friendly design with green walls and climbing plants on the two lowest levels, steel latticework on the next two levels, and timber latticework on the top two levels.
To enhance safety, we recommended the use of RB1X Spring Steel Buffers. These buffers are designed to absorb impact forces, minimizing damage to both the vehicle and the car park deck. After an impact, the barrier returns to its original position, ensuring continuous protection.
Berry Beam rails were chosen for their refined appearance, which is more aesthetically pleasing compared to traditional Armco ‘W’ sections.
An integral pedestrian handrail was installed above the barriers on post extensions, which are 1,100mm high.
The space between the barriers and handrails was filled with anti-climb mesh to prevent pedestrians from falling through or climbing over the barrier, ensuring a higher level of safety for all users.
